Town views ignored over new Apartment Block

Protest march planned on Saturday November 18th 2023

Amazingly in spite of 347 objections and opposition by the Town Council, Cumberland County Council's Planning panel have granted approval ( FUL/2023/0088) for the construction of a 4 storey apartment
block with car parking at the ground floor. The site is below Harris Park in the former railway station area.
18 canopy trees and 3 groups (containing a A total of 22 mature, and 20 young/semi-mature trees) will be cut down.

You can view the proposed designs here...https://cumberlandcouncil.my.site.com/pr/sfc/servlet.shepherd/version/renditionDownload?rendition=JPGZ&versionId=0683X00000qnehs&operationContext=CHATTER&contentId=05T3X00002hREAl&page=0
The plans were recommended for approval by the Planning Manager. and for some reason "the contemporary design and the scale of the 4 storey apartment building is supported by the Civic Trust." Coun Andy Semple, Cumberland Councillor Cockermouth South voted against the plans but the Council could not reveal the names and votes of individual councillors, merely the final majority vote of support.
The council report on the decision can be viewed here.
